Nancy Benton is a project manager with NatureServe who has managed biodiversity
information projects with partners such as the forest sector, the U.S. Bureau
of Land Management, and the U.S. Department of Defense. She is trained
as a conservation biologist and previously worked as a botanist for NatureServe
focusing on conservation of rare plant species and management of invasive
species.
J. Douglas Ripley is an environmental consultant who retired from the U.S. Air
Force in 2004 after 35 years of service. He has served as natural and cultural resources
manager for the Department of the Air Force, and was the dod project
manager for the original 1996 dod Biodiversity Handbook. He taught biology
for ten years at the U.S. Air Force Academy.
Fred Powledge is a freelance writer who specializes in biodiversity and related
environmental subjects. He is the author of 17 books and scores of articles in
publications as diverse as The New Yorker, Esquire, New York, BioScience, and
Audubon. He is the consulting science writer for the Bay and Paul Foundations'
Biodiversity Leadership Awards.
